Serving Tucker, Clarkston & Scottdale

A dentist for Tucker, Clarkston and Scottdale.

Straight down East Ponce de Leon or Lawrenceville Highway into downtown Decatur — one practice for the whole household.

The short answer

Better Health Dental serves Tucker, Clarkston, Scottdale, and the Stone Mountain side of DeKalb County from 127 E. Trinity Pl in downtown Decatur. Scottdale is about five minutes away, Clarkston about ten, and Tucker about fifteen to twenty depending on traffic. Dr. Sharifa Walker, DDS treats children, adults, and seniors and holds same-day emergency slots every day. Call (404) 446-2776 or request a visit.

This corridor — Scottdale, Clarkston, Tucker — runs northeast out of Decatur along East Ponce de Leon Avenue and Lawrenceville Highway, and most of it is a straight shot in. Households here are often looking for one practice that can see everybody rather than three offices for three generations.

How long is the drive from Tucker, Clarkston, or Scottdale?

FromUsual routeTypical drive
Scottdale (30079)East Ponce de Leon Avenue westAbout 5 minutes
Clarkston (30021)East Ponce de Leon Avenue westAbout 10 minutes
Tucker (30084)Lawrenceville Highway southwest, or Clairmont Road southAbout 15–20 minutes

Those are off-peak figures; add time between 7:30 and 9:00 am. All of these routes are surface streets and none requires I-285. If you are coming from the far side of Tucker, the Kensington or Indian Creek MARTA stations put you on the Blue line a few stops east of Decatur station, which is a short walk from the office.

Can one practice see the whole household?

That is the point of a family practice, and it is the most common reason households in this corridor call. Dr. Walker sees a child for a first visit and a grandparent for a denture adjustment, and the front desk will block consecutive appointments so you park once and leave together. For school-age children, the slots before the 12:30 pm lunch break and the first ones after 1:30 pm group most easily.

Tell the front desk how many people you are bringing when you book. A family of four needs a different block than two adults, and it is far easier to arrange at booking than on the day.

What does the practice treat?

Where do I park?

The office is at 127 E. Trinity Pl. Two small paid decks sit on the same block — 114 E. Trinity Pl and 120 E. Trinity Pl — and the DeKalb County courthouse deck is entered from W. Trinity Pl. On-street metered spaces on and around Trinity Place carry a two-hour limit, are enforced Monday through Saturday from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, and are free after 6:00 pm; you can pay at a solar pay station or by texting zone 7801 to 30202. A routine cleaning and exam fits comfortably inside the two-hour limit.

Rates and availability are set by the City of Decatur and by private deck operators and change without notice — the city publishes a current downtown parking guide. If you are coming for a longer appointment, say so when you book and the front desk will tell you which deck makes the most sense that day.

Insurance and paying for care

Better Health Dental files with most major dental benefit plans and verifies your coverage before treatment, not after. You get a written estimate of your share before anything beyond an exam and cleaning. Where a treatment plan exceeds a plan’s annual maximum, it can often be staged across two benefit years, and Sunbit and CareCredit financing is available for balances paid over time. If cost is the thing that has kept you away, say so at the consultation — a plan can almost always be sequenced.

Questions from Tucker patients.

Answers reviewed by Dr. Sharifa Walker, DDS. For anything not covered here, call (404) 446-2776.

How far is Better Health Dental from Tucker?

About fifteen to twenty minutes off-peak. The usual routes are Lawrenceville Highway southwest into Decatur, or Clairmont Road south. Neither requires I-285. If you would rather take transit, the Kensington and Indian Creek MARTA stations are on the Blue line a few stops east of the Decatur station, which is a short walk from 127 E. Trinity Pl.

Do you see patients from Clarkston and Scottdale?

Yes, and they are among the closest patients in the service area — Scottdale is roughly five minutes west on East Ponce de Leon Avenue and Clarkston about ten. The practice accepts new patients of all ages from the 30079, 30021, 30084, and 30083 ZIP codes. Call (404) 446-2776 or request an appointment.

Can my whole family be seen in one trip?

Yes. Consecutive appointments are blocked for household members so you make one trip and park once. Let the front desk know how many people are coming when you book, and whether any of them are children, since a first pediatric visit is scheduled differently from an adult cleaning. See family dentistry for what each age group’s visit involves.

Is there parking at the office?

There is no dedicated patient lot, but parking is straightforward. Two small paid decks are on the same block — 114 and 120 E. Trinity Pl — and the DeKalb County courthouse deck is entered from W. Trinity Pl. Metered on-street spaces nearby carry a two-hour limit, enforced Monday to Saturday from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm and free after. Current rates are on the City of Decatur parking page.

What if someone in the family has a dental emergency?

Call (404) 446-2776 first thing in the morning. Same-day emergency slots are held every day and go in the order they are requested. For a knocked-out permanent tooth, handle it by the crown only, keep it in milk or seated back in the socket, and call immediately. For swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, or a fever with facial swelling, go to a hospital emergency room instead — see emergency dental care.

I have not seen a dentist in several years. Where do I start?

With a phone call and a comprehensive examination, and without any lecture. A long gap is one of the most common reasons people call, and shame is the main thing that delays it further. You will be told what is actually there, in priority order, and a large plan can be staged clinically and financially so it is not a single decision. Many patients who expected the worst needed less than they feared.
