The short answer

Better Health Dental is the closest full-service general and family dental practice to Avondale Estates, Georgia, at 127 E. Trinity Pl in downtown Decatur — roughly a five-minute drive west along East Ponce de Leon Avenue. Avondale Estates is a small city with a short commercial strip, and dentistry is one of the things most residents cross into Decatur for. The practical advantage of going west rather than north toward the interstate is that you stay on surface streets the whole way and never touch I-285.

How far is Better Health Dental from Avondale Estates?

Avondale Estates sits immediately east of Decatur, and the two downtowns are about two miles apart. From the Tudor Village on North Avondale Road, the usual route is west on East Ponce de Leon Avenue into downtown Decatur, then south a block to Trinity Place. In ordinary traffic that is a five to ten minute drive. From the south side of Avondale Estates, College Avenue is the more direct run.

If you would rather not drive, the Avondale MARTA station is one stop east of the Decatur station on the Blue and Green lines, and the Decatur station exit puts you a short walk from the office. For patients who commute into the city, that makes a morning appointment genuinely easy — appointment, train, work.

What dental care is available to Avondale Estates patients?

Everything a general practice provides, under one roof, which for most households means they are not being referred out for routine work:

  • Preventive care — comprehensive exams, cleanings, digital radiographs, fluoride, sealants, periodontal therapy
  • Family dentistry — first visits for toddlers through senior care, scheduled back to back for a household
  • Restorative care — tooth-colored fillings, porcelain crowns, bridges, implant restorations, dentures
  • Cosmetic dentistry — veneers, bonding, contouring, smile design
  • Teeth whitening — in-office treatment and custom take-home trays
  • Root canal therapy — to save an infected tooth rather than extract it
  • Emergency visits — same-day slots held every day
  • EMFACE — non-invasive facial toning, offered at the practice

Where do I park?

The office is at 127 E. Trinity Pl. Two small paid decks sit on the same block — 114 E. Trinity Pl and 120 E. Trinity Pl — and the DeKalb County courthouse deck is entered from W. Trinity Pl. On-street metered spaces on and around Trinity Place carry a two-hour limit, are enforced Monday through Saturday from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, and are free after 6:00 pm; you can pay at a solar pay station or by texting zone 7801 to 30202. A routine cleaning and exam fits comfortably inside the two-hour limit.

Rates and availability are set by the City of Decatur and by private deck operators and change without notice — the city publishes a current downtown parking guide. If you are coming for a longer appointment, say so when you book and the front desk will tell you which deck makes the most sense that day.

Do you take my insurance?

Better Health Dental files with most major dental benefit plans and verifies your coverage before treatment rather than after, so you know your share in advance. For treatment that exceeds a plan’s annual maximum, Sunbit and CareCredit financing is available, and a larger plan can often be staged across two benefit years to use two maximums instead of one. See financing for the detail.

What should I expect at a first visit?

Allow about an hour. A first visit covers a comprehensive examination, periodontal measurements, digital radiographs, intraoral photographs so you can see your own mouth at a useful size, and a cleaning. You leave with a written plan: what needs doing, in what order, and what it costs. Nothing is scheduled beyond that unless you want it to be. New patient forms are on the patient information page, and completing them beforehand shortens the visit.

Questions from Avondale Estates patients.

Answers reviewed by Dr. Sharifa Walker, DDS. For anything not covered here, call (404) 446-2776.

Is Better Health Dental accepting new patients from Avondale Estates?

Yes. The practice accepts new patients of all ages from Avondale Estates and the 30002 ZIP code, as well as from Decatur, Scottdale, Clarkston, Tucker, Druid Hills, and the Atlanta neighborhoods just west of Decatur. Call (404) 446-2776 or request an appointment online and the front desk will find a time and verify your dental benefits before you come in.

How long does it take to drive from Avondale Estates to the office?

Typically five to ten minutes. The two downtowns are about two miles apart. From North Avondale Road and the Tudor Village, head west on East Ponce de Leon Avenue into downtown Decatur and turn south to Trinity Place. From the southern side of Avondale Estates, College Avenue is more direct. You stay on surface streets the entire way, with no interstate.

Can I take MARTA to a dental appointment?

Yes, and it is one of the easier options. The Avondale station is one stop east of the Decatur station on the Blue and Green lines, and the Decatur station exit is a short walk from 127 E. Trinity Pl through downtown Decatur. Patients who commute into Atlanta often take an early appointment and continue west on the same train afterward.

Do you see children from Avondale Estates schools?

Yes. Dr. Walker sees children from the first tooth onward, and household members can be scheduled back to back so one trip covers everyone. Appointments before the 12:30 pm lunch break and the first slots after 1:30 pm are the easiest to group for school-age children. See family dentistry for what a child’s visit includes.

What if I have a dental emergency and I am in Avondale Estates?

Call (404) 446-2776 as early in the morning as you can. Same-day emergency appointments are held every day and they are claimed in the order they are requested. Given the five-minute drive, Avondale Estates patients are usually the easiest in the service area to fit into a same-day slot. For swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, a fever with facial swelling, or uncontrolled bleeding, go to a hospital emergency room instead — see emergency care.

What are the office hours?

Monday through Thursday, 8:30 am to 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm, with the staff lunch break between. Friday, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Closed Saturday and Sunday. The 12:30 to 1:30 break means a mid-day appointment is either the last of the morning or the first of the afternoon, and both are good slots if you are coming from close by.
