Serving Kirkwood & East Lake

A dentist for Kirkwood and East Lake.

One MARTA stop east, or a short drive along College Avenue — without the parking problem of an in-town practice.

The short answer

Better Health Dental serves the Kirkwood, East Lake, Edgewood, and Oakhurst neighborhoods from 127 E. Trinity Pl in downtown Decatur — one MARTA stop east of East Lake station, or about ten minutes by car. Dr. Sharifa Walker, DDS provides general, family, cosmetic, restorative, and emergency dentistry, and accepts new patients from the 30317 and 30316 ZIP codes. Call (404) 446-2776 or request a visit.

East-side Atlanta neighborhoods are well supplied with dentists and badly supplied with parking. Coming one stop east into Decatur trades a circling-the-block problem for a two-hour metered space or a deck on the same block — which, for a routine appointment, is the better trade.

How do I get to Decatur from Kirkwood or East Lake?

By rail, this is about as simple as dentistry gets in Atlanta: the East Lake station is the stop immediately west of the Decatur station on the Blue and Green lines, and the Decatur station exit puts you a short walk from the office through downtown Decatur. From the Edgewood/Candler Park station it is two stops.

By car, College Avenue runs east from the East Lake and Oakhurst side straight into downtown Decatur, and from Kirkwood proper the Hosea L. Williams Drive and Memorial Drive corridors both connect east. Allow about ten minutes outside peak. Either way you avoid the interstate.

Why come to Decatur rather than stay in town?

Three honest reasons, and one honest counterpoint.

  • Parking that exists. Two paid decks on the same block, plus metered street spaces with a two-hour limit — enough for a cleaning and exam without watching the clock.
  • Everything in one practice. Preventive, restorative, cosmetic, endodontic, and emergency care under one roof, so routine work does not generate a referral across town.
  • The same dentist each time. Better Health Dental is owner-operated by Dr. Walker, not a rotating-associate group practice. Continuity is clinically useful and it is the thing patients notice.
  • The counterpoint: there are no evening or weekend hours. If you can only be seen after 6:00 pm or on a Saturday, this is not the right practice for you, and it is better to know that now.

What services are available?

Where do I park?

The office is at 127 E. Trinity Pl. Two small paid decks sit on the same block — 114 E. Trinity Pl and 120 E. Trinity Pl — and the DeKalb County courthouse deck is entered from W. Trinity Pl. On-street metered spaces on and around Trinity Place carry a two-hour limit, are enforced Monday through Saturday from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, and are free after 6:00 pm; you can pay at a solar pay station or by texting zone 7801 to 30202. A routine cleaning and exam fits comfortably inside the two-hour limit.

Rates and availability are set by the City of Decatur and by private deck operators and change without notice — the city publishes a current downtown parking guide. If you are coming for a longer appointment, say so when you book and the front desk will tell you which deck makes the most sense that day.

Insurance, cost, and financing

The practice files with most major dental benefit plans and verifies your coverage before treatment, so your share is known in advance rather than discovered at checkout. Where treatment exceeds a plan’s annual maximum, Sunbit and CareCredit financing can spread the cost, and a larger plan can often be staged across two benefit years. Everything goes to you in writing first — see financing.

Booking a first visit

Call (404) 446-2776 or use the appointment request form. A first visit runs about an hour: comprehensive examination, periodontal measurements, digital radiographs, intraoral photographs, cleaning, and a written plan. New patient forms are on the patient information page if you would rather fill them in beforehand.

Can I reach Better Health Dental on MARTA from East Lake?

Yes — it is one stop. The East Lake station is immediately west of the Decatur station on the Blue and Green lines, and the Decatur station exit is a short walk from 127 E. Trinity Pl through downtown Decatur. From the Edgewood/Candler Park station it is two stops. For many Kirkwood and East Lake patients the train is faster than driving at 8:00 am.

How long is the drive from Kirkwood to downtown Decatur?

About ten minutes outside peak traffic. College Avenue runs east into downtown Decatur from the East Lake and Oakhurst side; from Kirkwood proper, the Hosea L. Williams Drive and Memorial Drive corridors both connect east. No interstate is involved on any of those routes, which is part of why the trip is predictable.

Do you offer evening or weekend appointments?

No. The practice is open Monday through Thursday, 8:30 am to 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm, and Friday 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, and is closed Saturday and Sunday. If your schedule only allows evenings or weekends, this practice will not suit you and it is fairer to say so plainly than to have you find out when you call.

Is parking easier in Decatur than in town?

Generally, yes. There are two small paid decks on the same block as the office, at 114 and 120 E. Trinity Pl, and the DeKalb County courthouse deck is entered from W. Trinity Pl. Metered on-street spaces nearby carry a two-hour limit, enforced Monday through Saturday 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, and are free afterward. Rates change, so check the City of Decatur parking page.

Are you accepting new patients from the 30317 ZIP code?

Yes. The practice accepts new patients of all ages from Kirkwood, East Lake, Edgewood, Oakhurst, and the surrounding east-side Atlanta neighborhoods, as well as from Decatur, Avondale Estates, Druid Hills, Scottdale, Clarkston, and Tucker. Call (404) 446-2776 or request an appointment online.

What if I have a dental emergency?

Call (404) 446-2776 as early in the morning as possible. Same-day emergency appointments are held every day and allocated in the order requested. If you have a knocked-out permanent tooth, handle it by the crown only, keep it in milk or back in the socket, and call immediately — the first hour matters. Full instructions are on the emergency care page.
